We do 2 brands of SIM cards for use in Europe, Vodafone UK and Orange France.
Why do we do both?
Vodafone UK and Orange France have different arrangements with operators across Europe. These operators will have cell sites in different locations, with different service levels and different network contention issues. By having a multi cellular modem with connections on both networks, you are giving the boat the maximum range available as it moves around. You will also have a back up if anything goes wrong with either Vodafone or Orange France network infrastructure, billing etc, which although is unlikely can lead to very angry guests!
How much data do I need?
This varies boat to boat, and will of course change depending on what AV streaming is being used aboard, but a rule of thumb that we see currently is about 50GB per user per month. If you're on a boat with 12 crew and 8 guests and you're not limiting access, 1000GB per month is a good place to start.
But what happens if I go over my allocated amount?
As you get near your data cap, we will inform you, and will discuss with you if you want to continue using data at the cap, and if so, how much. We will then require a deposit for this amount which we can organise via credit card. The overage is charged at a very reasonable 3.40 euro per GB(Vodafone UK) and 4 euro per GB (Orange FR), so it's not the end of the world to go past your cap. We won't leave you in the lurch!
Is the data the fastest I can buy?
This depends on what operator you are using, and their relationship to Vodafone UK or Orange France. Generally speaking, if there are no network congestion issues yes it will be the fastest available. During network congestion - where the cellular sites are overloaded with users (Think Ibiza in the summertime) the network operator will prioritise users to their own rules regarding equipment connected, home networks and signal strength. Generally speaking these rules are not made public, so although we are confident that the data we sell is the fastest available, we (or anyone) cannot guarantee this.
